Biogeochemistry

vom Flyer

Biogeochemical cycling of matter is characterised by the interaction of physical, chemical, and biological processes. These interactions are especially complex in shallow coastal waters due to a tight coupling of processes in sediments and the water column. Researchers at the Hereon investigate oxygen, carbon and nutrient budgets in the North Sea using in-situ measurements of a variety of biogeochemical quantities from FerryBoxes, research vessels, gliders, and stationary platforms, as well as remotely sensed ocean colour. Numerical models help interpret the complex balance of biogeochemical interactions in coastal waters.
